For example:                                 6x + 5  =  4x + 11
First, subtract 5 from both sides:          6x  =  4x + 6
Then, subtract 4x from both sides:        2x  =  6
Finally divide both sides by 2:                 x  =  3

Solve these basic equations.  (Answers are near the bottom of the page.)

1.  5x  =  15                          6.  2x + 5x  =  36 + 6

2.  9x  =  27                          7.  3x - x  =  12 + 4

3.  2x  =  x  +  4                    8.  7x  + 5  =  2x  +  20

4.  5x  +  4x  =  45                9.  2(x  +  1)  =   3x  +  1

5.  8x / 4  =  36                   10.  7(x  -  3)  =   2x  +  9

SAT TIP:  Click here to review Order of Operations: clear
                parentheses; then calculate exponents and roots;
                then multiply and divide;  then add and subtract.

Practice with these examples:

Many students believe the SAT is a test of advanced math, but the SAT
has only arithmetic, algebra, and geometry - no trigonometry or calculus.
SAT TIP:  To solve an equation perform
                 the same operation on both
                 sides of the equation.
